Sometimes all you need to get going is a little inspiration – a role model illustrating the importance of public participation in all levels of government and what can happen if society becomes too complacent.
Here are some suggestions for easily accessible and digestible inspiration.
V for Vendetta (kinda campy but really inspiring!)
The Handmaid’s Tale (there's a series on Hulu but I like the original novel)
The Hunger Games (the movie series is great but you get more internal dialogue highlighting the protagonist's struggle re whether to get involved or not)
Pump Up the Volume (teen drama fighting against "the man" with Christian Slater - what more could you want?)
The Purge (what happens when society lets the elite take control)
Trumbo (the true story of a man caught up in Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist crusade)
Good Night, and Good Luck (another film set during the McCarthyism era)
Guilty by Suspicion (yet another film during McCarthyism - there was a lot of persecution inspiration)
TURN: Washington’s Spies (set during the Revolutionary War - based on a nonfiction book)
Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer (documentary about a punk band's rebellion against Russia's Putin regime)
Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom (documentary)
The Post (fighting to release the Pentagon Papers)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (classic Jimmy Stewart film about one man taking on the political establishment)
Harriet (bio pic highlighting the Underground Railroad)
Pride (lgbt protesters help striking miners in UK)
The Battle of Algiers (one of the greatest films of all time)
Bloody Sunday (massacre of peaceful protesters in Northern Ireland by British troops)
Selma (the Selma to Montgomery March - learn more about making "good trouble")
Crip Camp (documentary about the disability rights movement)
For kids
